The Official Newsletter of the North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby Official Race Date Mark your Calendar! The North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2008 on the North Main Street Hill. Sunday, June 22, 2008 is the rain date for the race. Our race will include the Stock and Super Stock Divisions. A B I G thank you to the News Journal for sponsoring the race again this year. Age Limits Stock Division: Participants must be 8 years old by June 21, 2008 and must not turn age 14 on or before August 1, 2008. Super Stock: Participants must be 10 years old by June 21, 2008 and must not turn 18 on or before August 1, 2008. If you have any questions about age limits please contact Chuck (419)347-3565 or Ruth (419)526-2625. Fees We are doing everything we can to keep registration fees as reasonable as possible. If you need a new helmet this year, it will cost you $12.50. The cost of a new helmet will not be included in the repeat registration fee. If you are ordering a new car, the helmet is now included in the kit. Again this year a run out fee ($10) is included in your registration fee. This fee will help pay the hard working car handlers that are lifting cars at the bottom of the hill. Ordering Deadline Monday, May 12, 2008 is the deadline for payment of the $525 (Stock) or $550 (Super Stock) sponsor’s fee. For the North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby Association to order your kit and have it available for you on Builder’s Day, we MUST have the sponsor’s fee by this date. If you need to order any parts, please call Ruth Kinsey (419 )526-2625 or Chuck Ridenour (419) 347-3565 for prices. All orders for parts are due by Monday, May 12, 2008. Builder’s Day Builder’s Day will be Sunday, May 18, 2008 from 12:00 Noon to 5:00 pm at Steve Cobb’s Weidner Motors in Mansfield. Refreshments will be provided. Please plan on being at the Builder’s Day the entire time if you are building a new car. You will be working on your own car. There will be knowledgeable derby people on hand ready to assist you. We are grateful to Mr. Steve Cobb of Weidner Motors for his support on Builder’s Day. Family T-shirts As a fund raiser for this year’s derby, we will be selling t-shirts. The shirts will have the identical logo as the racers’ shirts, however, the family t-shirts will be ash gray and the racers’ shirts will be white. See the enclosed order form for more details and to PREORDER shirts for your family! All shirts must be paid for when ordered. Orders are due Friday, June 6, 2008. Official Registration Date All racers must be registered no later than Friday, June 6, 2008 at 6:00 pm in order to participate in this year’s race. If you do not register by this date, you will not be able to race in this year’s race. Enclosed is your registration form. Fill it out and return it TODAY! Please note that the absolute last day to register will be Friday, June 6, 2008 there will be NO extensions given this year.
All program ads are due by Friday, June 6, 2008. Ads are available to any racer. You may purchase an ad for $50.00. Please be sure to submit a copy of what you would like your ad to look like to Ruth Kinsey NO LATER THAN Friday, June 6, 2008. Be sure to send any camera-ready artwork (logos) you’d like included in the ad. The News Journal will type set any printing you would like done (Ex: Good Luck, Jim). Trial Run Day On Sunday, June 8, 2008 a Trial Run practice day will be held in Lexington Industrial Park from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. The hill there is not quite as steep nor as fast as the North Main Street hill in Mansfield that the racers compete on in June, but the beginning racer will get some valuable practice driving time. There is no rain date for this activity. We will do our best to run between the raindrops if possible. Inspection Dates Official inspection and impoundment of your Soap Box Derby car will be Tuesday, June 17, 2008 and Wednesday, June 18, 2008. All racers will be required to be present at inspection. Your car’s weight must be within 10 pounds of racing weight before your car passes inspection. Inspection and impound will be at the Toy Time building at 280 N. Diamond Street. 2008 All-American Soap Box Derby The 2008 International Soap Box Derby will be Saturday, July 26, 2008. Mark your calendar and plan to attend the BIG race in Akron. Our local champs will leave for Akron on Monday, July 21, 2008. 2008 Rule Clarifications All axles must be 2001 or newer on the day of the local race. You must be sure that your racer is built according to the 2008 rules. Cars will be checked thoroughly at inspection. The 2008 rule book and plans are on the All American web site www.aasbd.org.
