Posted July 1, 2007: The annual NorthCentral Ohio Soap Box Derby was held Saturday, June 30, 2007, in downtown Mansfield. Emily Smith won the stock division by holding off John Speck. Caitlyn Fraley prevailed in the super stock division by defeating Davis Trask. Posted June 25, 2006: The annual NorthCentral Ohio Soap Box Derby was held Saturday, June 24, 2006, in downtown Mansfield. For the second straight year a McClellan drove into the winner's circle. Taylor, brother, of 2005 champion Lynelle, won the super stock division as his sister did the previous year. First-year racer A.J. Schleuter won the stock division. Posted July 3, 2005: The annual North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby was held Saturday, June 25, 2005 in downtown Mansfield. After being foiled in eight previous attempts, Lynelle McClellan made her ninth and final try pay off as she won the super stock division. Jordan Groscost was the winner of the stock division. There were 20 racers in the super stock division and 16 in the stock division. In the annual grudge match to kick off the oil can races, Mansfield mayor Lydia Reid defeated News Journal publisher Tom Brennan. Posted February 16, 2005: Preparations for the 2005 North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby got underway during an organizational meeting on Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at the ninth floor mayor's conference room. ... Officers for the 2005 race were elected and they are as follows: Derby director - Chuck Ridenour; President - Rick Sayers; Treasurer - Ruth Kinsey; Secretary - Lynelle McClellan; Vice president - Russ Kinsey. Posted June 26, 2004: Perrysville's Michelle Rich captured the super stock division and Shelby's Brooke Ridenour won the stock division at the annual North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby. Each winner followed in the foot steps of older siblings who were each two-time winners at the local race. Posted February 18, 2004: Preparations for the 2004 North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby got underway during an organizational meeting on Tuesday, January 21, at the ninth floor mayor's conference room. Officers for the 2004 race were decided upon and are as follows: Derby director - Chuck Ridenour; President - Rick Sayers; Treasurer - Ruth Kinsey; Secretary - Lynelle McClellan; Prize Patrol - Mick and Paulette Huber; Derby Historian - Russ Kinsey. Posted June 30, 2003: Comfortable temperatures and sunny skies highlighted the 2003 North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby which was held on the demanding and steep North Main Street grade in downtown Mansfield. Shelby's Joshua Beekman, the 2002 stock division champion, moved up to the super stock division in 2003 and battled out of the challenger's bracket and defeated Mansfield's Lynelle McClellan for the title. Brittany Lucci of Butler was awarded third place. The victory marked the third consecutive in the super stock division by a Shelby racer. Perrysville's Michelle Rich, following in the footsteps of her older sister, captured the stock division. Her older sister Kayla was the 1997 stock division champion and the 2000 super stock champion for the North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby. The stock division runner up in 2003 was Larry Baxter and third place went to Elizabeth McKinneyof Lexington. Posted May 2, 2003: The North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby unveiled its updated website. Sponsorship of the website is courtesy of Bits and Bytes and its owner Martha J. Sayers. The race sponsor for 2003 is the Mansfield News Journal. Posted October 30, 2002: The books on the 2002 race have been closed and thoughts are turning toward the 2003 race. Officers for the 2003 race are as follows: President- Rick Sayers; Treasurer- Ruth Kinsey; Secretary- Cindy Rich; Derby director- Chuck Ridenour; Assistant derby directors- Bud Klopfenstein and Kerry Rich. Mick and Paulette Huber will head up the Prize Patrol. Russ Kinsey is the Soap Box Derby Historian. Also of note, the All-American has come up with a concept car for the masters division. The end result when building a concept car is that the shell screws onto the floorboard like it does in the stock and super stock divisions. It takes much less time to build a concept car than if you were building a complete masters racer. |
