The champion of each division will represent the North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby at the world championship All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio.

The goals of the soap box box derby program are to promote families working together, to teach youngsters some of the basic skills of workmanship along with the spirit of competition and the perseverance to continue a project to completion.

How do I get started?

First... register with one of the members of the North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby. We will keep you informed of derby activities and/or send you a list of upcoming important dates.

Second... decide what division you are interested in participating in. Find a sponsor for your car and be sure your car kit is ordered before builder's day.

Third... Plan to attend builder's day. You will be able to build your car at builder's day with guidance from local officials and experienced racers.

The three divisions of the soap box derby

Stock Division: This is a car intended for the smaller youths (generally under 5-foot-5 and 110 pounds) to introduce them to the derby experience. The car is built from a kit and can be assembled in four to six hours. The kit includes a one-piece plastic body shell, pre-cut and drilled floorboard, pre-drilled axles and assembly instructions. Wheels are not included with the kit. The stock division car is for ages 8-13. The weight limit is 200 pounds, which includes car, wheels and driver.

Super Stock Division: This is a larger car similar to the stock car which is intended for the bigger kids under 6-foot and up to 150 pounds. This car is also built from a kit and can be assembled in four to six hours. The kit includes all parts, which are similar to those listed above for the stock car. Wheels are not included with the kit. The super stock car is for ages 10-17. The weight limit is 230 pounds, which includes car, wheels and driver.

Masters (Scottie) Division: The masters division car is intended for the more experienced and older youths. The car can be purchased as a complete kit, which requires approximately 80 to 150 hours to assemble. You can also choose to design and build the car yourself as long as the car complies with specifications outlined in the rulebook for the current racing season. The masters car is for ages 10-17. The weight limit is 255 pounds, which includes car, wheels and driver.
